Social networking and file-sharing revolution, the planet as it seems. Not a day goes by without a mention of Facebook, YouTube and MySpace in the technology news. It seems certain that everyone I know is connected to one or other of these three services. But if you think about it for networking and sharing always been a major driving force in the world of technology, it’s just the way we do, that has changed over the years.
The Internet itself is the ultimate expression of that which computers are affected, and cell phones was because of our desire to stay in touch and share information omnipresent years before people began to participate in these services and friends. But what’s next? According to TomTom it is Navi’s turn to the treatment.
TomTom’s latest device – the Go 720 – introduces a function it calls Map Share to the in-car navigation party. With the 720 and other devices in the current palette, users can add or make changes, errors in the onboard card and invite them to benefit other users. The intention is, of course, an end to share those moments – or at least reduce the frequency with which they appear – if your Navi will ask you to turn right on a no-junction turn right, make a U-turn in the middle of a highway or reduction of a private road. Not that you ever so blindly follow instructions simply wrong, of course.
As a system supplier, it works fairly well. Correction of an error or adding your own “missing” points of interest is simply a process to go to the map corrections screen and select one of several options – everything from share and blocking roads and reversing direction to the processing street and place names, and also by lack of roads. And with many options to choose to download changes made by others is a breeze. Just Go 720 automatically into its USB cradle and it will download and upload the changes you have specified. You can choose to download all corrections, only those that are “popular”, or those that we considered and ratified by TomTom mapping teams.

TomTom has made clear many thoughts in the function and it certainly is an innovative step forward, but despite all that they have a major flaw. As it stands, the system is probably only by those who an area know very well how it is impossible to fault on the fly to mark. Passing a non-right-turn junction in London after the 720 asked me to it go down, I would like to have it marked on the map for me to remember where the error occurred. But there is no way to do this and the number of people willing to stop and pull over only a map to correct errors, I suspect, will be few and far between.
Of course, the Go 720 is shared not only to card – it’s absolutely rammed to the gills with other great features too. It has a bright, high-definition widescreen 4.3in dims with a light sensor and increases the brightness automatically. It has an automatic volume control that increases the volume of the audio instructions depending on the level of noise in the cabin. It will not only say to the right and left, but also has a text-to-speech engine that can be read out street names and numbers on how to chip approach.
And if you are unhappy with the volume output of the excellent built-in speaker (unlikely), the Go 720 also has an FM transmitter in the pipe so you can transfer the sound through your stereo. In theory this means you can use the TomTom as your in-car MP3 player (yes, it has such a well), and hands-free phone (with the integrated Bluetooth adapter) and have everything running safely through your car radio. There is even text-to-speech engine to read incoming text messages to you.
In practice, however, I found myself sticking with the built-in speakers have, because the volume was not as strong as I would have liked. I had to turn up the volume on my stereo system to listen to music and clear directions, and that made small scratches and FM interference extremely annoying. It is also a feature that is flooded is not much use in densely populated urban environments where every inch of the FM signal band with hundreds of pirate radio stations vie for third place. The Bluetooth functions still fantastically well in non-FM mode, but you’d have to use the headphone output to your MP3 files to listen to them effectively.

More impressive for me is the speech recognition engine, which seems to be happening even with quite a lot of background traffic noise. I screamed Borehamwood, Sheffield and different address while driving around the North Circular Road in London and each raised immediately and provides a list of options to choose from at any time. Again, it’s not perfect – you still have tap the screen twice or three times to the voice recognition option will, and sometimes when they do not recognize what you said, it opens the speech recognition mode, but that was nitpicking. With a little practice will allow you to attract new goals, without, and enter from the street and a fantastic bonus.
You can even use your own voice instructions when you get with the TomTom Stock options supplied. And this points to another of the 720 outstanding characteristics – its adaptability. Unlike most satellite-navigation devices you’re not what comes out of the box is limited. Almost anything can be turned on or off. The screen layout, for example, can be changed to ensure that the information is displayed at the bottom or on the screen. You can choose to display the information in this info-bar. The automatic volume control can be turned on or off, and the list goes on …
Routes can be adapted for hikers, bicycles, limited speed, highway avoidance, speed or shortest route. You can tender for specific types of POI, so that a gas station or a hotel, an alarm will sound happen. And a really handy feature allows you to add shortcuts to your preferred option on an image that can be accessed through a dedicated button on the main screen.
Finally, it is understood that the route, the user experience and driving directions are excellent. As with other TomTom products, the voice directions are clear, what warning is really about the next one or two turns, and the cards very well and its building base areas in large cities and the ability to shrink the view automatically when arriving at a turn, so you see the road layout clearer. This is a feature I particularly like my E510 million, combining the advantages of a 2D map with the “realism” of a 3D one.

I drove over 1,000 miles through England and France, in London and in rural areas, and I found the 720′s directions almost impossible to fault. Tested a false statement in the time I did it in London and cut a roundabout was replaced with a standard intersection in Alsace in northeastern France, but that was it.
The 720 is also fast, smooth update of the map and do not do big jumps in large as some other products. It calculates routes quickly if you stray track and allows you to search the map. TomTom class home software makes it a snap to update the system, and by the excellent TomTom Traffic, which uses your phone’s Internet connection to receive the latest traffic information is absolutely easy and a much more effective method than the use of TMC traffic information.
Is there something wrong with this product? When I pointed out, I would say that the night mode graphics are not entirely clear, but then with the automatic brightness adjustment is not as necessary as it is with other devices. Planning complex itineraries is not as easy as it could be either – you can not just keep adding waypoints to your present route as one with a million navigation devices, for example. Instead, you must begin by rejecting the plan not as an itinerary rather than a default route, but at least the function.
Conclusion
I must apologize if this review has read in some places a bit like a large list of features, but to give you a good idea of exactly what can make the TomTom Go 720, it has. And I have not covered every single feature is not here. Suffice it to say, the TomTom Go 720 is the most capable, feature-packed, easy-to-use and innovative in-car navigation device on the market today. And under 300, it is not terribly expensive. If you want the ultimate in satellite navigation, you buy one of these. You will not be disappointed.
