Apple has released the “Gold Master” of IOS 4.2, and it is available for developers to download today. Hot on the heels of Google’s robots cars, a team of German researchers AutoNomos Labs in the Free University of Berlin have upped the ante and reveals the driverless taxi. Imagine never arguing about the most efficient route or mental debate about the merits of the deposition of a driver at the wheel of disability almost killed you. Made in Germany (MIG), an autonomous Volkswagen Passat’s cabin with a hail iPad app, and it eliminates the most unattractive aspect of taxis: the driver.

MIG is equipped with GPS navigation, video cameras, laser scanners, sensors and radars that it uses, equipped to create a 3D map of its surroundings. It uses this map to detect pedestrians and other vehicles as it navigates the road. To hail MIG, passengers use an iPad that its GPS location sends the vehicle and told the taxi where to get them. Passengers can track the taxi as it navigates to them, and once in the vehicle, they can say iPad the vehicle to your destination.

The benefits of the technology are clear: safe taxi service to airports and no surly driver yelling parents on cell phones while you are forced to listen to angry talk radio as well as TomTom XL 340-S Navigator. And tipping is likely to be required.
