Pioneer AVIC-U310BT In-Dash Navigation Receiver Review

Pioneer’s goal with the AVIC-U310BT, the entry-level model in its AVIC in-dash navigation line, was to meet the three key needs: GPS navigation, digital audio playback and Bluetooth hands-free speakerphone.

Design

At the top of the most solid front panel is a single CD slot. Below and on the left are the physical controls. , the primary physical input is a control that turned the volume or scroll through lists, addressed as a joystick, met or pushed like a button, make a selection. The button does not feature much tactile distinction between pressing a directional button and a center, so that more than a few random samples while trying to navigate the menus U310BT.

Above and below the control buttons are for fashion, between the navigation and audio playback modes and cunning, the U310BT placed in browsing mode for the exploration of digital media sources, iPod switched taxonomy and radio presets. Finally, at the bottom of the front panel are buttons for selecting source, also known as a power button and an AM/FM band selection, as a double a back button when browsing menus, and audio digital media lists. Enjoys the majority of the front panel is removable touch-screen display. The full-color display measures 4.3-inches diagonally, about the same size as the screen on the Garmin Nuvi 205W, or the TomTom XL is 340 S. screen very responsive to touch input.

The detachable display has a rechargeable battery, so it can plan independently of the rest of the U310BT for entering destinations, travel, and save favorites to be used. However, it lacks the detached screen, a GPS antenna, so it can not be used as a portable navigation device. At the top of the front panel is a power switch and an SD card slot that can load the data for use with the navigation function, but not media. Along the lower edge of a mini-USB port for connection to a PC.

Behind the scenes, the Pioneer has inputs for your Car AM/FM antenna, an analog 1/8-inch auxiliary input, an input for wired remote control adapter and Pioneer’s proprietary connector for add-on modules. There are also inputs for the included GPS antenna, external microphone and USB connection. Although the AVIC-U310BT supports iPod playback, it does not come with a 30-pin dock connector, so BYO sync cable. Although the AVIC-U310BT is a big double-DIN unit, he does not support video playback from DVD, digital or analog source.

The unit has no pre-amp inputs and two sets of preamp outputs – front and switchable rear/Subwoofer output – so users have to choose between a dedicated subwoofer output, or in-dash fader control of external amplifiers. This is not much of a big deal for the average user who probably drive their speakers with the amplifier U310BT internal, but it could be a problem for system builders. The unit comes with a standard USB cable for connecting digital audio players and storage devices, a mini-USB cable for loading data from a computer, an external GPS antenna with magnetic base, an external microphone for Bluetooth hands-free , a standard wiring harness, and a CD with instructions and AVIC Feeds software.

Features

Starting with navigation, using the U310BT Solid-state memory for its navigation data, seek support and map rendering are fast. The unit has text-to-speech, the proper street names aloud for easier navigation, and freeway lane guidance, which is an indicator for what paths are valid for the current route of approach to interchanges shows. Traffic is not the U310BT.

The unit comes with a pitifully small group of points of interest. There is not even a category for restaurants, one of the most commonly used POI categories. Instead, Pioneer expects its users U310BT the panel on their PCs and upload custom points of interest with the AVIC Feeds software that is available to the unit and connect for free download. Who more summoned for an additional POI destinations can decide Pack SD card or do, but adds that an estimated $ 100 to the bottom line U310BT’s.

Moving on to the hands-free operation of the Pioneer connects to your phone with Bluetooth. Pairing can be initiated on the device or on the phone with a four-digit PIN code. After pairing, the AVIC-U310BT automatically pull your contacts in the memory. We could soon all our 100 contact phone book draw on the Pioneer in seconds. The receiver does not support Bluetooth stereo audio streaming. Audio sources are supported with AM/FM radio, a CD player with MP3/WMA playback slot, a rear-mounted 1/8-inch analog AUX input and a USB port, storage devices and digital audio players like the iPod.

When an iPod is connected, the user can quickly scan the U310BT by artist, genre, album, song, playlist, and so on with the rotary switch. The U310BT supports audio book playback with adjustable speed. A special “Passenger control mode allows the user to select music with the iPod/iPhone on-screen controls while retaining the full digital audio and video connection metadata. This is a useful feature for jumps when a friend in the car and want a song on your iPod without finding out the U310BT the interface or for passengers who want to listen to their iPhone without interrupting the music multitasking.

Performance

From – again – with navigation, Pioneer lead time extremely fast, about 45 seconds for a cold start and is ready for the subsequent restart no doubt thanks to the solid-state memory fast read times and the faceplate of the battery allows more standby state with the navigation data to go. We were very upset by the U310BT deficit of preloaded points of interest, but with how easy we have our own points of interest with the AVIC-feeds and Google Maps software to add content.

Bluetooth hands-free function is almost flawless in execution, with super easy mating and foolproof automatic synchronization of contacts. We were able to quickly search through our 100 plus contacts with the AVIC-U310BT’s alphabet. The system is fed by Parrot hardware, including a noise-canceling microphone that, when mounted near the driver’s head, delivers crystal clear voice quality. During our test calls at highway speeds, we received no complaints about street noise or echo.

Pioneer U310BT Pioneer AVIC U310BT In Dash Navigation Receiver Review

We have only two minor complaints about the way the U310BT handles calls. First, the speakerphone volume is set separately from the audio playback volume via a touch-screen button instead of the spinning intuitive volume control. Second, entry of a call not pause audio playback, but it just dumb. So, if you listen to a podcast and a call comes, you will miss all the content that happens for the duration of the call and rewind.

Audio playback from Pioneer 14 Watt x 4-channel amplifier (50W x 4 max) can be set with a three-band EQ with three levels of loudness, and a bass booster function. High-pass filter for the internal amplifier and low pass filter for subwoofer output can be both from the device, the interface to be adjusted. Each audio source can be a level adjustment value for the consistent volume control mapped between audio sources. After connecting an iPod or digital media source, users must wait for the U310BT until the device that can read and take a few seconds. After the initial loading, the navigation of digital media libraries is relatively fast, with few breaks here and there.

A minor annoyance that we ran into during our tests is that there is no central place to customize the settings U310BT. The navigation menu has its own touch-screen-based menu settings, like the telephone system. The audio controls are on a separate screen and are accessed and navigated entirely with the knob. Finally, more esoteric settings can just remove the front panel, connecting to a PC, and adjusting the settings with the AVIC-feed software to access. Even some of the settings never took place. For example, by default, the unit’s button illumination color to set by a spectrum of colors, but we were able to get the device to stop cycling, although the AVIC-feed software has an RGB setting for a fixed lighting color.

Summary

Overall, the AVIC-U310BT is a very easy way for most entry-level users all of the cabin tech they need to add a field. With a MSRP of $ 700, it is also one of the best ways to do this. The Design Pioneer deserves extra points for the removable front panel, the input driven us to our destinations, leave the comfort of our home, rather than in a car in neutral. We also like the Pioneer all-in-one concept, but had to dock a few points for the interface design of the lack of integration. For example, the number of menus have been particularly frustrating.

U310BT The feature set is quite good, and the navigation with text-to-speech, speaker phone and digital audio playback. The device gets bonus points for iPod integration and the neat iPod Passenger Control feature. However, the navigation system’s dismal POI catalog is limited in many ways, the usefulness of the device for impromptu trips. Although the feature list is long, the AVIC-U310BT even an entry-level unit, which makes a few sacrifices in the name of the advanced features for a good basic tech experience at an affordable price.
