When we last JVC El Kameleon car audio receiver saw the way we our Editors’ Choice Award for its innovative interface and expandability. However, we wanted the device a touch screen instead of the recommended a touchpad. The new El Kameleon KD-AVX77, we get our wish. The new El Kameleon has an extra large touch screen that fills the entire single-DIN faceplate. But is a bigger screen is always better?
The screen is super difficult to play DVDs, but provides a great level of customization. You can download custom backgrounds, customize text and button color and design, and even customize the virtual buttons layout.

Design
The KD-AVX77 is a DIN unit with a detachable faceplate. The face is almost completely devoid of physical controls, with only an on / off / mute button in the upper right corner and a button to throw the cover on the bottom right corner.
The rest of the KD-AVX77′s faceplate is occupied by a 5.4-inch super size (3.32:1 aspect ratio) touch screen display with a resolution of 800 pixels by 240 pixels. Frankly, a wide screen of this is of limited use for displaying DVD movies, because very few DVDs are encoded in a super CinemaScope aspect ratio. As a result, movies viewed on the screen KD-AVX77 eventually cut, stretched, or just finished with black borders.

The display features a motion sensor that can be used, for example, the hidden pop-up buttons on the screen when your hand approaches the screen while playing DVD. The system can be set to the default interface buttons or black to hide from the idle screen and the proximity or contact to respond.
However, where the El Kameleon’s touch screen comes into its own with customizable interface. You are able to select different backgrounds, and virtual button layouts to choose from. The KD-AVX77 also touch gestures for basic commands, like a whirling finger to rapidly increase or decrease the volume or swiping horizontally to return or forward.

Features
The JVC KD-AVX77 has an AM/FM radio tuner and a single disc DVD/CD player behind the motorized faceplate. The optical drive supports MP3, WMA, WAV and AAC digital audio playback. Playing DVDs with Dolby Digital 5.1 surround option, but only if external amplifiers are used for at least the center and subwoofer channels such as the internal amplifier has only four audio channels.
Around back, a USB pigtail allows for connecting USB storage devices and digital media players such as iPods and iPhones. The device can control your media and using the buttons on the screen, or give up control of the connected iPod while maintaining the digital signal using the passenger control mode. Out of the box, you can playback audio, like podcasts and audiobooks, but no video. However, with an iPod video interface cable, you can unlock video playback.
An internal wireless connection provides the connection of mobile phones for hands-free calling and Bluetooth A2DP audio streaming media players.

Performance
internal amplifier of the KD-AVX77 El Kameleon outputs 20 watts into four channels (RMS) with a peak power of 50 watts per channel, which is fairly standard these days for an aftermarket unit.
Audio quality can be customized with a seven-band EQ with 12 presets (including 3 user), Standard fader / balance adjustment, subwoofer level adjustment, and high pass and low pass filter adjustments. The internal amplifier can be set to a high power or low power – the latter is a good setting for sound without destroying the OEM speakers.
Hands-free calling sounds good with the external microphone mounted near the head of the driver and audio comes through the speakers of the vehicle. Conversations were not completely devoid of traffic noise in our test vehicle, Chevrolet Aveo, but callers were able to clearly hear what we said.

Navigating the digital media library on a connected iPod through the touch-screen interface was not as intuitive as the dial-based system on some of the Alpine systems we’ve tested, but we were able to sort through our Artists , albums, and podcasts quickly. The interface shows six options at a time when you can browse using a horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of the list screen. Tap a location on the scrollbar to that point in the library, making it very easy for the end of a long list of artistic freedom quickly.
The gesture controls can be very useful if they worked consistently. We had a hard time getting the unit to quickly increase or decrease with the curly finger gesture. Fortunately, on-screen buttons for these controls are generally available.

Conclusion
The JVC KD-AVX77 is a clear improvement over the previous generation El Kameleon Unit (KD-AVX44). The larger screen adds nothing to the DVD-viewing experience, because it is too small for detail, but customizable interface is very cool. We especially like that the speed of the iPod / iPhone interface has grown, but the user interface is too clumsy and requires you to jump through too many screens to perform simple tasks like changing the playlist.
The extensibility and flexibility of the KD-AVX77 makes this a great receiver for system builders looking for stealthy in-car multimedia systems to be built without a large double-DIN in-dash screen. However, anyone who did not intend to use the KD-AVX77 is extensibility will probably elsewhere to find simpler, easier to use interfaces.
