TomTom ONE 140S Review

When it comes to budget GPS systems, TomTom has nailed the formula. The company A row of navigators have always earned high marks for value in recent years, navigation supplies on an equal footing with the big boys, but without the extras that are typically inflated price tags.

Despite the minimal coding reputation TomTom not allow a row does not stagnate. The latest model, the 140S, pads some meat on the bare-bones model with the inclusion of many trickle-down features of more expensive Navigators and a $ 200 price tag. If the extra features worth the upgrade for users budget if the baseline is a 125 model to have – more than fifty dollars less? We put you in the windshield to find out.

Features and Design

To rearrange the functions on the 140 S in perspective, are stacked to the best of them in addition to effective device from TomTom: One 125th Both units feature 3.5-inch screens, Map Share technology for updating maps, and easy port mounts, so what exactly does the extra money buy you? For starters, the S in the name text-to-speech capability for spoken street names called, which means you hear “Turn on Burnside” instead of “turn left”. This also includes IQ Routes (using actual data collected from TomTom users to plan the quickest route to real driving speeds based), Lane Assist (which shows a perspective view of the driver of upcoming interchanges) and speed cameras warnings.

The One 140 S also has the elegant design, TomTom One line-up. It measures only 0.8 inches thick, fits perfectly into the palm with a solid sense of weight and has been disguised in matt black plastic around the outside, which not only looks beautiful, it resists fingerprints, too. There is a power button up top, a two-inch speakers on the back, and a mini-USB port for charging and connecting to a computer. Looking back on the relatively clunky TomTom One Third Edition has a long way in dressing up his Nav Units come, that’s not what we would be ashamed to stay in a BMW.

Testing and usage

Speaking of the all-important question of fixing TomTom has redesigned the windshield this time also. The entire A line uses the same slender windshield that TomTom easy port calls. Unlike the scrapping we have seen in the past, the new unit folds flat against the back of the unit when not in use, turn easily through 360 degrees in place and locks the glass with a twisting motion that creates a killer grip. Although it is certainly cleaner than previous versions, the GPS from the rotation ring appears so light that you actually need to keep the two pieces if you move it so it end up on the floor. It is not difficult, but perhaps only at the end of desperately trying to fish it out of the front passenger foot space a few times before this method is deeply rooted.

As a side effect, mount the compact makes it much easier to remove both the cradle and GPS from the car windscreen together and helps stop a theft magnet made visible.

For any changes on the outside of the software on the One 140 S is not much coming from a few years past, which means it’s getting a little look next to similarly priced devices from competitors such as Mio and Garmin in the elderly. The lack of aliasing (which produces smoother looking lines) on the map, the most glaring omission to be here. When the main screen provides the truest sense of the word indistinguishable from a five-year-old model from the same company, it’s time for an update.

That is, the lack of bells and whistles also seems to hold fast and snappy OS. There is every menu item opens immediately, will boot in less than five seconds, and plotted a route from Portland to San Francisco in under 20 seconds. We also love the extent that TomTom allows you to adjust everything from the nature of the virtual keyboard to the different colors on the map during the day and night. Although the interface is not intuitive to have we ever used to help a number of tutorials that pop up the first time for all important functions here, the learning process for novice users (know-it-alls, they can also disable).

As a general rule, the TomTom Navigator operates 140 S about as good as you could ask. Address entry is fast, turned the 7-million low POI library most of the places we needed immediately, and distances seem even more refined than those from previous TomTom units, which had only occasional hiccups with side streets. We just want them to be missed for faster diverted, or had the foresight to give some time to buffer with the new directions. Often we would miss out again only to spit it all the new roads as we accept them.

Although the computer-generated voice that reads directions is not perfect (never), we have rarely had many questions to understand the rather robotic voice box, and with such a small screen, the audio directions to work much better than trying to read, every street. IQ routes also helped drive predict a closer look, though not quite as good as high-end TomTom units, the traffic speeds were segmented fine time of day (for the market to compensate). Lane Guidance, a boon for serious complex intersections, but do not expect the lifelike pictures you’ve seen in navigation systems such as the Go 930th Instead, the One 140 S them as icons in the corner: three white arrows highlight the far right, for example. That makes it no less useful. If anything, we do not appreciate the whole screen taken away to an intersection, which can sometimes be confusing show.

Conclusion

A high-end equipment budget may sound absurd, but prefers the 140 S is well and stepped between the minimum for the road trip and the luxury of an expensive device with a mashup of features that many buyers appreciate forever the price tag. That is, the $ 50 price difference between the One 140S and its much bigger 4.3-inch siblings, the TomTom XL 340S makes the upgrade a no brainer for us, if you do one of the smallest glove boxes known to man have.
