11.04Garmin Edge 800 Navigator Review
Appearance ago the Edge 800 similar in shape and design of the current Edge 500, although around 20-30 percent upsizing. In terms of functionality, but it is much closer to the larger Edge 705, but the 800 has a larger screen than either more efficient through the packaging of the touchscreen, that all but fails on three physical buttons. Depending on the configuration you choose, to be shown on the big screen with 37x55mm each digit of at least 5mm to ten pieces of information.

A hidden microSD card slot accepts any number of Garmin City Navigator or topographic maps for the choice of turn-by-turn directions or a scale 1:24000 topographic view of the surrounding terrain – and can either be displayed in a new bird’s-eye perspective or the usual 2-D environment. Subscribers of satellite images Garmin Birdseye service can also upload high resolution satellite images on the Edge 800 and combine them with other navigational data for a more realistic picture.
Other features include a 15-hour claimed battery life, an ANT + wireless receiver for integration with various third-party electric meter or the optional speed and cadence sensor, mounting faster satellite location, and Garmin latest quarter turn handlebars or stem. Although only now officially the new Garmin Edge 800, we have already comfortable playing with a pre-production model since the last few days and may, at least part of its performance report first-hand.

First of all, the new touch-screen interface and updated firmware provides significantly more intuitive navigation of menus than before, and the appropriate size ‘Buttons’ easy to use even hit when rolling along the speed or sweaty and/or dirty fingers (have not we have not taken our test unit off-road, so that we can not say how good it with full-finger gloves works).
Main ride data on three states split-screen, if available with up to ten of info, it’s not often that you stray off the main road takes you. We configured our testers for all our important data show ride on one side, important time info (such as day and sunset) on another, and give in to the trip data to a third.

On-Road Navigation from Garmin’s experience shows in the area with the intuitive selection of the target and an impressive selection of points of interest such as convenience stores and gas stations – critical information when you close to bonking. The easy to follow turn-by-turn directions were also handy when we’ve run errands on our townie or even while driving, although in the latter case, the screen might be a touch on the small side.
Installation is easy, even if the massive array of options on tap reserve best a fair bit of time to get through them all. And for those of you who are still on the heart rate data, the new premium soft touch strap great. It is not only a lot more comfortable to wear, but it records electrical signals as soon as it officially (not wet the electrodes!) And thanks to the removable transmitter for hand washing is approved (although we are still testing it in a washing machine on delicate cycle).
Our prototype sample is not without a glitch, though. From now on, our percent grade display is not working properly (although the post-ride data show that the model properly recording differences in height) and if the backlight is not turned on, can see the numbers a bit fuzzy around the edges.
Garmin Senior Media Relations Specialist Jake Jacobson tells us that the development team in close to the solution of the problem is precisely percent and is still discussing final display color and contrast options for better visibility. Fortunately, both of hiccups will be repaired via a simple firmware upgrade.
