The Garmin Nuvi 1690 shares many of the features found on the recently reviewed Nuvi 1370T, including a 4.3in screen, text-to-speech conversion (with the help announce the device in street names), Bluetooth phone connectivity and lane assist intersection with profile (so you can see simulated signs). The 1690 and slightly thicker, and about half an ounce heavier than the 1370T, however, and unlike the 1370T it contains multi-segment routing with route optimization.
Navigating with the Garmin Nuvi 1690 reflects the experience we have with other Nuvi GPS devices had. 1690 achieved good distances without surprises, and its text-to-speech function worked as expected.
Lane assist with junction view provided a clear visual for our exit tests. The Bluetooth interface easily with a LG LX9900 phone paired and worked as a speakerphone. We were disappointed that the Bluetooth interface – in other devices like the Garmin Nuvi 200 and Nuvi 1000 product series, but unlike those in society nuvi 700 and nuvi 800 series could not read – the contacts and the call list of the phone. We had the better Bluetooth interface to the expected high-priced Garmin Nuvi 1690.
The menu structure on the Garmin nuvi 1690 is essentially the same as in other Nuvis, although, on the 1690 are connected to various services NuLink sprinkled throughout the menus. Most of these services are to be found for the most part, logically in the menus.

For example, the associated services in the Tools menu, Flight Status, Weather, Ciao and currency. After flight status you can check flight numbers and arrival departure search. Check weather gives you the current day weather forecast for your current location with a five-day forecast. The device also offers the current conditions for New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles, but you can not specify, in other locations. Ciao aggregates multiple location-centric social networks such as GyPSii, and Buddy Beacon. Finally, the daily currency exchange function updates the exchange rates, so you always have the latest information.
Garmin lists NuLink other associated services under the popular Where’s menu. The first screen of Google Local Search offers as an option, and white pages than others. With White Pages, you can enter a phone number by name and location, or you can use a phone number, and the Garmin Nuvi 1690 is to do a reverse lookup – a very practical function. From the results screen, you can use the navigation or (if you paired the device with a Bluetooth-enabled phone) to call the number.
Google Local offers online access to all 13 POI categories by the Points of Interest icon covered. You can use Google Local Search to close, in another city, in a final goal in a popular tourist destination, or – if you are an active route – along your current route, these are the same options you have when you the POI database. This is a place where the related services could be integrated better, why not combine the searches? If we look for a POI, we do not care whether it comes from the internal POI database or from the Google-Live connection.
